Salt Lick Creek

Where:  Jackson County, TN.  About 12 miles from Gainesboro.
When I was there:  Labor Day weekend 2008
Number of sites:  113.  This is a campground with many sites on the water.   There are 8 sites on the water with sewer and 5 sites with sewer with a water view.  There are 18 other sites with sewer but they are in a wooded area.
Site #:  69.  This is a good site but it is not on the water or near the water.  It is very spacious with plenty of shade.  We had plenty of room for our dog
and to set up a volleyball/badminton net.  I did like this site very much.
Comments on other sites:  Site 71 is very close to site 30.  I would recommend that you know the camp
ers in that site before you book either one.  Site 70 is terrible.  There is a certain kind of tree that sheds its leaves constantly which make for a dirty feeling camp area.  The trees also leaves a film of some sort
all over the vehicles.  (Per my in-laws)
Other sites to avoid:  Sites 76 - 82 have no shade.  Even though they are on the water, it is very hot.  I don't l
ike 82.  We stayed there 2 years ago on Labor Day.  The reason I didn't like it is because it is on the outside of a curve in the road so car lights are constantly shining in the campsite at night.
Sites that look great to me:  I would love to stay in any site between 55 - 63.  They are on the water, have great shade and are very close to the swimming and playground areas.  Also, the sites 19, 21, 22 and 23 look great because they have sewer and are on this little shaded inlet from the lake.
Comments on campground:  This campground is located on Cordell Hull Lake.  This lake is okay.  At Salt Lick Creek we noticed the water was murky.  On Sunday afternoon, in-laws had rented a pontoon boat at Defeated Creek, 10 miles away on the same lake.  We noticed that area of the lake was so much cleaner and clearer.
As for the campground, it is very clean and neat.  There is a nice playground, swim area, volleyball nets, and is great for bike riding.
One thing I did not like about this campground is the fee for campsites.  There is no rhyme or reason to the c
harges.  We were charged the same as a water site and were no where near the water (unless you count the bathhouse as water access.)  When I try
to find answers, all I got was the run around.
And most every time I am camping at this campground, I see a snake.  This particular weekend, we saw one in the water.  YIKES!!!!!  My daughter said she saw one in the swimming area.  I was not there to confirm that siting.
Rating:  7/10.  We do like to camp here but usually it
is our second choice when Defeated Creek is full.  I like the size of the park and the grounds are very well kept.  I don't like the distance to it, or this part of the lake.  It is 20 miles to Carthage and 12 miles to Gainesboro, and there is no Wal-Mart there.  Sometimes, you just need a Wal-Mart.  The closest ice is 4 miles in a little roadside market.  It was 1.39 for a small bag.  I sure do wish that Ten
nessee campgrounds had ice machines at the sites like Kentucky does.

Please leave your comments about your experience or questions about this campground.  This is only my opinion but I would like for others to leave their opinion as well.

The Narrows

The Narrows in Glasgow, KY

Where is it:  About 5 miles from Glasgow, KY
When was I there:  July 08
Number of sites:  80.  There are two areas, area a and area b.  Area A is newer than B.  The sites in A are nicer, have more space and new picnic tables.  The sites are nice but NOT level.  There are very few sites that are close to the water.  The swimming area is quite a hike from the camping area.  Also, there is no shade at the swimming area so take an umbrella for sun protection.
Site #:  A-8
Comments on campground:  I really enjoyed this campground.  It is clean and very nicely kept. There is a marina right next to the campground which is situated on Barren River Lake.  The lake is wonderful.  It is a clean, deep and wide lake.  We didn't see any trash or logs in the water.  This campground is so close to Glasgow that it is easy to run to town for any supplies. is Ice is available.
Rating:  8/10.  I give it an 8 because of the distance to the water.  Another thing that happened was bugs.  Yes, bugs.  About 7 pm every evening these gnat-like bugs started swarming.  They were so annoying especially right at dinner time.  We talked with our "neighbor".  He said that the gnats came only in the first few weeks of July.  By August they would be gone.  The bugs would not stop me from returning to this great campground and lake.  I loved it.

Sorry, I don't have any pics of this campground.

Lillydale Park

Where is it:  On Dale Hollow Lake
Number of sites:  115.  Many of these sites are for tent camping only.  There is a great island that is for tent camping only.  All of those sites have great water views.
Site number: 27.  This site was not on the water but we did have a fabulous view of the lake.  I do prefer this side of the campground because of the lakeside view.  The other side of the campground has a view of a cove.
Comments on the campground:  This is a nice campground with a playground, volley ball court, a beach area, church services on Sunday morning, and boat ramp.  The most wonderful thing about this campground is the lake.  Dale Hollow is clean, clear, deep and wide.  The kids can swim right there at the campsite.  Also, boats can be pulled up to the shore to anchor.
Rating:  9 out of 10.  I give it a 9 only because the trees were killed by a beetle several years ago so it was not very shady.
